Do you want to be happier?
I know I do! I mean, who doesn’t want to be happier??
And I might be trying to draw you in a little bit with the oh so mysterious title! But I got a real good one for you today! And it’s something that is totally easy to accomplish within just a few minutes a day!
I use this little trick ALL. THE. TIME. And while things might not be totally okay, right away it does make it easier to deal with.
Want to know what I’m talking about?
Being thankful! Practicing thankfulness and being content with the amazing blessings that you already have!
I find that when I’m focusing on the good things in my life, I can turn the blinders on when it comes to negativity.
From road rage, supermarket anxiety, fights with my significant other, fights with everyone else, and those moments of self doubt and hate.
Sometimes we get so focused on what seems to be going wrong in our lives that we tend to skim over the good until we get that next “good thing”
We forget to remember how far we’ve come and how good we have it.
Does this mean that we stop striving forward and pursuing other things? NO!
But in order to enjoy the time getting to your new dreams and goals, you gotta be thankful!
Recommended reads JUST for YOU!
So how can I be more thankful?
1 // Write it down
Or journal, whatever!
Everyday write down at least three things that you’re thankful!
Writing things down helps our brains focus and learn what needs to be prioritized.
Writing helps keep you motivated.
And writing helps us remember more.
I love adding this part to my morning routine before I get started on my work.
It just helps keep things in perspective for me!
2 // Say it out loud
And similarly, saying stuff out loud has a lot of good benefits to writing it down.
What I love about saying stuff out loud though is that it instantly brings me back down to reality.
There’s nothing like a great reminder about what’s going right in your life to distract you from the wrong!
Saying something out loud also helps you visualize it which keeps it more real to you.
It also helps you become more stress free! By saying it out loud, you’re releasing the tension building up. YES! Even if what you’re saying is a good thing.
3 // Get your family involved
This is a great way to become more accountable to practicing being more thankful.
Every night during dinner, you can say some things that you’re thankful for! It becomes a great new tradition, make you think more about what you’re thankful for, and is a FANTASTIC way to get everyone talking!
Plus, you might never know what you’re family is thankful for! It might totally surprise you! You could be put right on the spot and forced to hear how much your family likes you! Whoa!
4 // Tell others
It’s so much fun getting other people involved! Even more so when you’re telling others, THANK YOU!
Let’s not forget to tell other people a genuine thank you! For whatever awesome thing they’ve done for you or currently do.
Saying thank you to others is great for us because it’s important to recognize the hard work and time that our loved ones take for us!
I know that my life would be so much different if it weren’t for the amazing people in my life going above and beyond!
And it’s good for us to express that to them! Plus they’ll LOVE to hear it!
Give yourself a challenge to send out 3 messages a day about what you’re thankful for!
You could send a text to your parents or best friend about how much their influence has meant to you.
Send a card to someone that you admire and/or helped in your life.
Post something to social media! This one is really convicting! It’s one thing to have a private message be read and not something personal by a bunch of people that might not know!
5 // Have a small inventory ready in your head
Anytime that you’re feeling super angry or annoyed, have a list ready to remind yourself about the good and happy things in your life!
If you’re stuck in traffic just remember that some people would love to have their own car.
If you’re pissed that there’s a long line for the coffee shop, think about how wonderful it is that you get to afford a $5 cup of coffee!
Next time your mom calls and you screen it without calling back, don’t get mad, think about how much you’ll miss those phone calls when they’re gone.
It’s all about having perspective!
How will being thankful make me happier
You’ve probably picked up on what I mean here but it’s all about having a good prospective. As well as being mindful about the blessings in our life so as to not get so caught up in the messy things of life!
And according to Harvard health, having and PRACTICING gratitude has 6 powerful benefits!
- Greater happiness
- More positive
- Enjoy good experiences more
- Improved health
- Better apt to deal with conflict and adversity
- Build stronger and better relationships
All of these good things come from something so simple! It’s crazy!
Now I know that we talked a lot about how important it is to be thankful for what we already have, but that doesn’t mean to quit striving for more. We should be able to take a breath and look at the blessing in our lives and be thankful for them! Thus thankfulness = happiness.
Now! Let’s get started! Tell me ONE thing that you’re thankful for! I’ll even go first!
I’m thankful for my home! It keeps me warm and safe from the outside world! There’s been no major repairs and it’s pretty easy to clean! YOUR TURN!
All the best!
And if you could do one more thing for me!
